Brenda Sorrell has a heart as big as the bus she drives in the Montgomery County School District. Filled with compassion, Sorrell has paid special attention to specific circumstances that affect specific students and she has found unique ways of providing support. One example is when a young student on Brenda’s bus told her she had a dog that was not being fed. Sorrell began bringing the student a small bag filled with dog food every day. Another example of Brenda’s compassion is apparent when she helped a young girl on the bus, living in poverty as a result of her father’s incarceration. Brenda bought the girl clothing and shoes. She even took the girl’s laundry home on Fridays so she could wash and dry it for her by the following Monday. On another occasion, a young boy was upset because he was unable to ride the bus as result of custody battle brought on by his parent’s recent divorce. Brenda visited the boy at school to provide moral support until he was able to ride on her bus again. Sorrell even threw a baby shower, on the bus, for a young female student who had become pregnant and was considering dropping out of school. Brenda’s kind deeds and encouragement helped this young lady decide to finish school.

Leading by example and performing volunteer work are also a part of what makes Brenda Sorrell such an obvious choice. To set a positive example for the students on her bus, Brenda decided to quit smoking cigarettes. She has also gone above and beyond her duties by volunteering to participate in bus driver training skits, assisting with the drivers’ activity fund, volunteering for transportation department service at school open houses and she serves as the chair of the bus safety poster contest. Compassion for people and reaching out past what anyone expects of her is why Brenda Sorrell has been selected as a finalist for the Fred Award this year.
