Gary Marx, president of the Center for Public Outreach and renowned futurist
Marx will explore trends such as the aging population, the emergence of the Millennial Generation, the impact of emerging technologies on the pace of change, the emphasis on an economy based on social and intellectual capital, the move from information acquisition to knowledge creation and breakthrough thinking, the forces pushing standardization toward personalization, the expansion of careers and growing competition for talented people, the coming change from a majority-minority to a minority-minority society, the growing concern about planetary security, the need to make ethical choices, and a host of others. In addition, attendees will consider the implications of the trends, what students need to know and be able to do for life in a global economy and society, and learn the qualities of future focused leaders.
An international speaker, Marx has worked with educators, business people, and other community and government leaders on five continents and has spoken in all 50 of the United States. As a futurist, he has directed a number of futures studies, and has written several books. His most recent books, published in 2006, “Sixteen Trends...Their Profound Impact on Our Future” and “Future Focused Leadership...Preparing Schools, Students,
and Communities for Tomorrow’s Realities” are the basis of Marx’s presentation. Previously, Marx served as a senior executive for AASA and a school administrator for the 10,000-student Westside Community Schools in Omaha, Nebraska, and the 82,000-student Jefferson County Public Schools in Colorado. Marx returned to Jefferson County to advise on strategy in the wake of the 1999 tragedy at Columbine High School.
