Fred Strange, a custodian at Grant's Lick Elementary in Campbell County, is a devoted employee who takes his job very seriously. Strange performs his custodial duties with devotion that is matched only by his kindhearted attitude and eagerness to lend a hand outside of his job description. Fred has served as a mentor to students as well as a volunteer to the staff. Grant’s Lick's principal, Amy Razor, refers to him as a “key component to student success.” He has gone out of his way to pay attention to the specific needs of individual students and staff. One instance that illustrates this is when a preschool class was added to Grant’s Lick Elementary shortly before the beginning of the school year. Fred not only cleaned the room but also set up all of the art supplies for the new teacher, created display boards, hung curtains and decorated the room with vocabulary words and art pieces. Upon finishing this thorough set up, he invited the rest of the staff to the room in order to surprise the new preschool teacher.

It comes as no surprise that Fred knows every student by name as he contributes close to twenty hours every week in volunteer services. Fred devotes many of his volunteer hours to his responsibility as the coach of the school’s Robotics Team and is highly involved with aiding students in set and lighting design for their annual opera. So as not to fall behind on his custodial responsibilities, Fred has volunteered to use his vacation time to take the Robotics Team to competitions. He goes the extra mile with his involvement in the opera because not only does he teach students how to build sets and hang lighting but, also instructs students how to accomplish their tasks with respect to safety regulations. His eagerness to help, impeccable attitude, and ability to encourage students to embrace their own creativity through technology and theater makes Fred Strange an easy selection to be considered as a finalist for this award.
