Mr. Johnny Myers, a bus driver in Graves County, has been nominated for this year’s Fred Award. Mr. Johnny, as the students refer to him, is an excellent candidate and an obvious finalist for this honor as he constantly displays a warm attitude towards every student that rides his bus and maintains a genuine concern about the well being of each student. Mr. Johnny continually checks on specific students who are experiencing problems and even partners with the principal and/or the guidance counselor to help solve these problems. Myers’ ability and willingness to go beyond the call of duty is so noticeable that several students have expressed interest in future careers as bus drivers so they could be “just like Mr. Johnny.”
Mr. Johnny not only goes the extra mile for students that ride his bus but, he is involved with helping students off the bus. He is a volunteer reading coach for two students at a time when many volunteers only have one. Additionally, Myers volunteers in a program hosted by the Graves County district that selects underprivileged children and uses funds from an unknown benefactor to purchase clothing and a toy for those students. Specifically, Mr. Johnny drives the bus that transports these students to stores that sell clothing and toys. He has also accompanied a student into the store to help them select the perfect outfit. When you think about what is required of a bus driver and compare it to all of Mr. Johnny’s deeds, it becomes very obvious why he has been selected as a finalist for this honor.
