Philip Mattingly has been declared “our rock” and the “go to” person by the Nelson County School District. As warehouse supervisor and bus driver trainer, Philip has many responsibilities on his plate. Mattingly exemplifies a Fred because he not only takes each of these responsibilities very seriously, he utilizes his duties as a way to show personal attention to the people that are affected by his actions. Philip will do little things to make a big difference such as coming to work early on snow days and shoveling the superintendent’s parking spot and then walking her into the building to make sure she doesn’t fall. He makes sure that all the lights are turned on by six o’clock every morning and tries to predict what people will need. If a staff member’s office is becoming too cluttered, Philip will bring in more shelving without being asked. He will also stock workrooms with more paper before he is asked. Philip has such a reputation for paying attention to the individual needs of his colleagues that they all say it is pointless to show up early in the morning and set up for a seven o’clock meeting. Mattingly will arrive even earlier than you and have the whole meeting room set up exactly the way you would have wanted it.
 His everyday responsibilities are enough to earn him a nomination but Philip goes the extra mile and carries himself with an air of kindness and humility. Philip will check in with faculty and staff every morning to see if there is anything extra that each person needs, also checking to see if he can provide an extra “boost” in spirit for anyone who is not having a good morning. He is the first to rescue someone if their car will not start. Mattingly has even offered to accompany three new Chinese teachers to their first shopping trip in an American mall. When praised, Philip will never take credit for his efforts. He typically responds to compliments on a job well done by saying, “Well, I have great help that makes my job so easy.” This willingness to go beyond his required responsibilities and maintain a level of kindness and humility makes Philip Mattingly an obvious finalist.
