Call for education session proposals

The Kentucky Association of School Administrators (KASA) is seeking education session proposals for its Annual Summer Institute, July 21-23, 2010, at the Galt House Hotel & Suites in Louisville. 

The three-day event will focus on Connecting the Commonwealth to all facets of our global society to ensure Kentucky’s students emerge from schools college ready, globally competent and prepared to compete, connect and cooperate with their generation around the world.
Proposals are sought from speakers who have excellent ideas, proven programs and relevant experiences to share, as well as unique solutions to universal problems in the strand areas listed and described below:

Strand Areas

  • Connecting Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment to Our Global Society
  • Connecting Learning Environments to Our School Cultures
  • Connecting Personal and Professional Development to Successful and Sustainable Leadership    

Presentation Parameters
Education sessions will take place Thursday, July 22, 2010, and will be one hour in length.  Presenters are encouraged to allow time for questions and/or group discussion.  Longer sessions may be considered by the review committee if requested by the presenter.  Presentations should address one or more of the strand areas listed. Other topics are welcome. 

Audience

KASA’s annual institute is designed for p-12 school and district-level administrators and others serving students who attend Kentucky’s public schools.

Proposal Review and Notification

  • All proposals will be reviewed by members of the 2010 institute planning committee and KASA staff.
  • Reviewers will evaluate the proposals through a series of questions:
  • How well does the proposal relate to the event theme and focus areas?
  • Does the proposal contain innovative, research-based, and cutting-edge ideas that have achieved successful results?
  • Will the proposal’s content attract and stimulate attendees?
  • Does the proposal clearly specify what participants might gain from the session?
  • Are the ideas, practices, and programs replicable, and do they focus on the hows and whys?
  • Does the proposal provide a unique solution to a universal problem?
  • Are presentation techniques current, diverse, and interactive?
  • Does the proposal/session provide the level of insight, instruction, and material that meets the high standards and expectations of KASA attendees?
  • Does the session provide theory and practical application?
  • Will the presentation help attendees lead schools effectively while doing their jobs? 
  • KASA will notify primary presenters after April 30, 2010, regarding the acceptance or non-acceptance of all proposals. 

Tips for Preparing your Proposal

  • Please limit your session title to no more than 15 words, and be sure it clearly reflects the session’s focus and content. 
  • Avoid abbreviations and acronyms that do not clearly explain the session’s content.
  • Use active verbs to describe what will occur in the session. Examples include words such as describe, discuss, role-play and present.
  • Describe specific presentation techniques that you will use—such as interactive, lecture or multimedia—so that participants will know what kind of session they will attend.  Describe what you will be doing in the session and what participants can expect to gain.
  • Indicate whether handouts or other resources will be available.
  • Write in complete sentences. Do not use phrases.
  • Limit your description to 50 words.  

Presenter Registration
All presenters must submit a registration form for the institute by or upon acceptance of the proposal.  One-day, complimentary registration will be provided for no more than two presenters per session attending Thursday, July 22.  Presenters are encouraged to attend the full three-day institute at the early bird member rate of $199 per person (member rate is $249; non member rate is $449).  Registration fee includes access to all general sessions (Sir Ken Robinson, PhD; Tony Wagner, PhD; and Meagan Johnson), education sessions, featured workshops, exhibit hall, meal functions, activities and six-hours EILA, conference or finance officer credit hours. 

Proposal Submission

Each organization or individual may submit up to two session proposals.  Priority will be given to those proposals aligned with the strand/focus areas listed on Page 1.  To submit a proposal for consideration, complete the Education Session Proposal form on Pages 3 and 4 of this document and return to KASA by April 1, 2010.

1. Connecting Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment to Our Global Society—Educating the Net generation; best practice for delivering instruction; prevention/intervention systems; effective high school transformation; achieving yearly gains in literacy and math; expanding programs in world languages, visual and performing arts, career and technical education and health and physical education; transitioning from grade to grade and building to building; model programs for high achieving schools; assessment and accountability; emphasizing the arts to create, express and think across disciplines; 21st century learning skills; effective K-12 strategies for integrating international education content across the curriculum; futures studies; service learning; internships; international and travel partnerships; international learning/diplomacy skills; principles of democracy; career adaptability-developing untouchables; media literacy; ethical dimensions; global citizenship

2. Connecting Learning Environments to Our School Cultures—
Creating a culture of rigor, relevance and relationships; valuing diversity in the school setting; changing demographics in the school; living and learning in a pluralistic society; raising expectations and learning opportunities for all learners; cooperative learning experiences;  building positive rituals and traditions in school, the classroom and the community; creating global vision and culture of acceptance; celebration and recognition of ideas that create a positive climate; leadership for an improved or positive school culture; healing a toxic school culture; communication for professional collaboration; organization of school day/school year; effective classroom environment; green school initiatives

3. Connecting Personal and Professional Development to Successful and Sustainable Leadership—Best practice of award winning leaders; implementing common core standards; community partnerships and resources; data-informed decision-making; programs that overcome poverty; working with school councils; adapting to changing demographics; leading from the middle; community communication; coaching and mentoring; recruiting and encouraging diverse leaders; managing complexity; improving health and wellness; effective learning walks; instructional leadership teams; survival skills for new administrators; resources to advance international education; understanding of how international education promotes academic excellence and equity for all students; meeting demand for higher level teaching and leaders; technologies to assist in instruction and administration
