Build the Team/Lead the Charge was the theme of the 2008 NASSP Convention held in San Antonio on February 22-24. Sessions and speakers emphasized the collaboration of dedicated administrators, teachers, staff, community partners, students and central office in pulling a diverse team together for student achievement. As part of the NASSP team, state coordinators met on several occasions to provide leadership and communications from our state organizations and the national.
The state coordinators and state presidents met on Friday to introduce and hear NASSP board candidates at the National Candidates Forum and later to vote on the nominations and the final nominees. KASSP President, Tracey Lamb, was named to the Minority at Large seat of the NASSP board. Congratulations to Tracey for representing KASSP so well.
State Coordinators met later that day to vote on national officer candidates. Steve Pophal received the majority of votes to win the office of NASSP president-elect. Steve has been the Wisconsin state president, the WASC state principal of the year, and served on the NASSP Board. President-elect Larry Bradley was installed as the NASSP president.
State Coordinators met again on Sunday, February 24 at 9:00 a.m. I reported on the increased attendance at our KASSP fall conference. This increase was attributed to guest speaker Larry Bradley, then NASSP president-elect and Bill Bond, NASSP staff member, and our adding a required principals' in-service from our state athletic association. We plan to continue both practices of adding mandatory in service, and to bring NASSP leaders to our conferences. I also reported on KASSP's increased attendance at our assistant principal conference in January. New conference registration practices and fees made attendance more feasible for assistant principals.
At the Sunday meeting, there was discussion among state coordinators regarding the election process held on Friday. Some members felt that the coordinators forum with the candidates and the voting should be open to all members for observation of the process. After much debate, the coordinators decided that the NASSP should do a better job of educating it's members on the nominations/election process. However, there would be no change is the current process.
The 2009 NASSP Convention will be held February 27- March 1, 2009 in San Diego, CA. Give other states' principals an opportunity to learn about the exciting, innovative educational programs we have in Kentucky middle and high schools. Share your practices by submitting a proposal to present at next year's convention. Submission deadline is May 2, 2008.
