The Kentucky
Association of Secondary School Principals (KASSP) began functioning
as a statewide organization with elected officers in 1957. The Association's
first president was Clyde T. Lassiter, principal of Henry Clay High
School in Lexington. The secretary/treasurer was J. M. Deacon, principal
of the Lexington Junior High School.
Meetings were initially part of the April KEA convention and consisted
of a speaker and dinner, usually held at the Kentucky Hotel. The
forerunner of the present fall conference was a one-day November
meeting held at the Taylor Education Building on the University
of Kentucky campus.
During the late sixties, KASSP began holding summer workshops
in Bowling Green on Western Kentucky University's campus in conjunction
with an annual fish fry. Many participating principals were housed
in campus dormitories during the two and one-half day workshops.
During these years, fall conferences were held at state parks,
such as Barren River, Kentucky Dam Village, and Lake Cumberland.
With increased attendance, the group moved to Owensboro where conferences
where held until 1988.
In 1987, KASSP initiated a two-day conference for assistant principals.
In 1991, the Association began holding all of its conferences at
Lexington's Marriott Griffin Gate Resort.
Through the years, KASSP's mission has changed to adapt to the
needs of Kentucky's secondary school principals, who serve the
needs of an ever-changing diverse student population. Currently,
KASSP concentrates on professional development for its members
as they continue to provide leadership in implementing the Kentucky
Education Reform Act, thus, enabling all students to reach proficiency
in all academic areas..
KASSP is governed by a Board of Directors that consists of president,
three officers, a state coordinator, 16 board members (one from
each KHSAA basketball region), an assistant principal representative,
a middle school representative, and a retired representative. Each
member is elected by the membership. In addition, the KASSP office
is led by an executive director and an associative.
KASSP is affiliated with the National Association of Secondary
School Principals (NASSP) and the Kentucky Association of School
Administrators (KASA).
