Academic failure and student disengagement with the school experience
continue to lead the reasons why students exit school without a
diploma. Over the years many different venues have been offered
as possible deterrents to the dropout dilemma. However, the dropout
rate both nationally and in Kentucky remains relatively unchanged.
Below, you will find the links for two dropout prevention documents
that may be beneficial.
The first describes fifteen distinct strategies that have been
identified by the National Dropout Center as being effective with dropout prevention. The second document
is a self-assessment tool designed to provide an additional level
of analysis (at the district or school level).
KDE staff developed this tool for the explicit purpose of pinpointing
areas of strength and potential areas of concern. Hopefully the
union between locally identified needs and proven effective strategies
can have a positive effect on your efforts.
Should you wish to discuss either of these venues, please call
KDE's Division of Student/Family/Community Support Services' Dropout
Prevention Branch at (502) 564-3678.
