Employee Discipline in an Education Environment© (EDEV)
In November 2008, the American School Board Journal asked the Council of School Attorneys to identify the most common types of legal issues faced by 21st Century Schools. Overwhelmingly, the group ranked employment-related issues such as teacher discipline, workplace discrimination and termination number one on that list.

August 31, 2010, for EDEV Module #1: Types of Employee Discipline: During this session, participants will consider the ways in which the five most common disciplinary measures used by schools and districts often create legal risk when executed in either an unreasonable or an inappropriate manner. As an important part of this leadership staff development opportunity, participants will also analyze video-based re-enactments of actual disciplinary cases to apply practical, research-supported strategies for minimizing exposure to liability in an "offline" environment. September 14, 2010, for EDEV Module #2: Grounds for Employee Discipline: During this session, participants survey the reasons why administrators or supervisors must often take or initiate disciplinary action against employees. For each of these acts of employee misconduct or lack of professional competence, consideration is given to the impact of the offense on campus safety and/or school climate - and ultimately student achievement. Along the way, participants also examine the role of important federal or state statutes, Governing Board policies, and the negotiated agreement in establishing valid and enforceable grounds for employee discipline within a comprehensive and defensible Code of Employee Conduct. More Information / Agenda
November 9, 2010, for EDEV Module #3: Executing Employee Discipline: During this session, participants gain an overview of the general principles and workflows required to reduce the risk associated with disciplinary actions involving employees. After considering the role of progressive discipline guidelines in "quality assuring" the disciplinary process, attention is shifted to the need for establishing a repeatable pattern of formal or informal investigation once allegations of employee competence or lack of professional competence arise.
