This 90-minute session will provide superintendents with concrete examples of four data tools that provide a comprehensive picture of factors driving academic achievement. These tools enable district leaders to review current challenges and trends in the following areas:
- Environmental review of demographic, economic, and real estate data
- Key performance indicator review in reading and mathematics
- Human capital review of district staff
- Academic success metric review of high school completion
Presenter: Sam Howe is Vice President of Academic Planning & Analysis for the Scholastic Education Group. In this position, Sam provides school district leaders with pro-bono, decision support, analytic consulting services in 1) strategic literacy planning, 2) financial planning for literacy initiatives, 3) analysis of literacy achievement data, 4) demographic analysis, and 5) analysis of READ 180 reading achievement gains in comparison to usage and implementation fidelity metrics. To date, Sam has provided decision support consulting services to over 500 district leadership teams and four state departments of education.
Outside of Scholastic, Sam is retired from the board of trustees of an educational foundation in Northern New England where he served as Board President and Chairman of the Finance Committee. In the late 80s, he served as a school board member in suburban Philadelphia. Prior to joining Scholastic, Sam was a technology, strategy, and marketing consultant to educational publishers.
Sam started his career as a science teacher and computer center director. He has taught every grade from K-12 with the majority of his teaching experience at middle school. In the early 80s he led an educational research project in the classroom application of interactive video technology. Sam is the author of two books, twelve educational software titles, and approximately 40 professional publications in educational technology. In 2006, he served on the advisory board for the National School Board Association’s Next Chapter publication, a primer on Reading Next for school board members. He has a BA degree from Earlham College in Richmond, IN and as done graduate work in molecular biology, computer science, and communications at Bryn Mawr College and the University of Pennsylvania.
