Current research clearly indicates that 21st Century school leaders must be prepared differently than the traditional programs in the past. Through the work of the Wallace Foundation in Kentucky (Kentucky Cohesive Leadership System – KyCLS) and in collaboration with the Kentucky Department of Education, Kentucky Educational Professional Standards Board and the Council on Postsecondary Education, and colleges and universities, the Kentucky Cohesive Leadership System Continuum for Principal Preparation and Development has been developed for aspiring principals. This continuum provides a field-based, authentic curriculum to better prepare principal candidates to lead school improvement efforts. For this reason, we are offering aspiring principal candidates the opportunity to meet with a group of peers that are at similar levels of development working on dimensions and functions vital to becoming effective instructional leaders.
For 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 school years, we will offer this new preparation program for educators interested in becoming school principals and leading Kentucky’s schools. This program, sponsored by KASA/KLA, has been designed in collaboration with the Kentucky Cohesive Leadership System, Jefferson County Public Schools and Indiana University Southeast for Level I and II licensure. Courses will be delivered in central Kentucky, the Louisville metropolitan area, and online. (Indiana University Southeast is located in New Albany, Indiana, which is five miles from downtown Louisville).
Applicants to this program must have a minimum of three years teaching experience. Additionally, candidates are required to meet one of the following requirements: have a masters degree, be participating in a masters degree program, or be seeking admission to the Indiana University Southeast masters degree program. Principal Certification and Rank I (with approval of additional or previous coursework) are available through this collaborative.
Participants will attend KLA national consultant events, KLA and Indiana University Southeast Aspiring Principal Cohort sessions, and will engage in an online learning community with both KLA and Indiana University Southeast. The field-based coaching component will offer opportunities for candidates to apply their learning by conducting classroom observations and to receive coaching tips on how to provide meaningful feedback to teachers on highly effective instructional practice.
