According to Rick Stiggins, co-author of Assessment for Learning: An Action Guide for School Leaders, “To be certain that students have learned what we intend for them to learn, we must develop balanced assessment systems that provide data on how students are progressing, and that also use the classroom assessment process to promote greater learning.” To build on this premise, Creating A Balanced Assessment System will provide research supporting the need for schools/ districts to create and use a multi-layered approach for assessments that will improve learning. The research will include models of Assessment OF Learning and the more important Assessment FOR Learning.
Participants will also receive examples of assessments and assessment data
to use as benchmarks in examining their district/school assessment program.
Participants will be
- challenged to begin thinking differently about assessment and grading;
- provided new insights in assessment’s role in closing the gap between what is taught and what is learned; and
- provided examples to use in beginning the process of creating a balanced assessment system at both the school and district level.
