Catching Up The Kids Left Behind: How High Poverty/High Performing Schools Successfully Close the Achievement Gap for Poor and Minority Students

Based on the best selling book The Kids Left Behind (Barr and Parrett, Solution Tree, 2007), attendees will learn how high poverty/high performing schools are achieving remarkable success. Proven approaches will be identified and analyzed with special emphasis placed on leadership strategies used. Effective strategies will be modeled and mini work/discussion sessions scheduled for participants to focus on concept application and self-evaluation of their school or district.

Dr. Robert Barr, former Director of Teacher Education at Indiana University, Dean of Education at Boise State University and Oregon State University, and 2007 KASA featured workshop presenter, has served as a consultant to a number of the nation’s poorest school districts to help them improve the achievement of poor and minority students. He has presented his research to legislative education committees in Kentucky, Texas, Indiana and Oregon. Barr has appeared on the William Buckley, National Firing Line TV show, been interviewed on ABC’s Evening News with Peter Jennings, and debated Bill O’Reilly on the O’Reilly Factor. He is the co-author of 12 books.
