Kentucky is proud to announce the Teacher as Leader Endorsement for educators who would like to more actively participate in school-based decisions. The concept of shared leadership is an idea that became prominent through the teachings and lectures of Richard Elmore, a professor of educational leadership at Harvard University. “Teacher Leaders” are educators who use their expertise to improve student learning by working inside and outside the classroom in formal and informal ways to augment the professional skills of colleagues, to strengthen the culture of the school, and to improve the quality of instruction.
In 2001, the Wallace Foundation established the State Action for Education Leadership Project (SAELP I) currently known as the Kentucky Cohesive Leadership System (KyCLS) to advance the development of highly effective principals. The results of the KyCLS project indicated that instead of the principal as the sole leader in the school, a better model is distributive leadership that includes teacher leaders. Recently the Education Professional Standards Board (EPSB) approved a Teacher as Leader endorsement.
For 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 school years, Kentucky Leadership Academy (KLA) will offer a new program for teacher leaders who are interested in becoming members of school and district instructional leadership teams by acquiring teacher as leader endorsements. Membership in the Leadership Institutes requires successful completion of the Kentucky Teacher Internship Program (KTIP). In order to achieve the goal of every student proficient and prepared for success, school leaders have begun to implement instructional leadership teams. For this reason we are offering teacher leaders this opportunity to participate in KLA as part of a Teacher as Leader endorsement program.. The institute will also include on-line and field-based experiences that enrich teacher leadership knowledge, skills and dispositions.
Sponsored by KLA, the Teacher Leadership Institutes will work in conjunction with interested colleges and universities to include the institute as credit toward a teacher leadership endorsement. To launch this initiative, Asbury College (*pending EPSB approval) is partnering with KLA and plans to deliver an MA in Education resulting in a Teacher as Leader endorsement.
Participants in this program will attend our national consultant events, KLA and Asbury College Teacher as Leader Cohort sessions. The opportunity will be given to participate in our online learning community, including online learning in collaboration with Harvard University on teaching and leading for understanding, data analysis and instructional technology.
