Join us for a lively and enlightening forum on ways educators can avoid common mistakes made with Response to Intervention (RtI.)

Although many states require implementation plans from districts, wide variance exists on what exactly RtI is and how it should be implemented. Even a cursory review of the literature revelas conflicting positions on RtI. No wonder setting up an RtI program is like traversing a minefield.

Based upon the latest research and the direct advice of many RtI experts, this event will help you understand how to implement RtI in a practical and workable manner. You will learn:

  • Reflecting on the Research: The Central Principles of RtI

    While substantial variance exists in the ways schools implement RTI, there is a very consistent set of core principles on which RTI plans are based. What are the ideas at the very core of RTI? And how do we stay true to these central ideas when implementing?

Presenter: Gene Kerns, Renaissance Learning

Gene M. Kerns, Ed.D., is a third-generation educator with teaching experience from elementary through the university level, in addition to K–12 administrative experience. Kerns serves as vice president of training and certification for Renaissance Learning, Inc.

With more than a decade of experience in leading professional development sessions, as well as taking on the role of presenter at national and international conferences, Kerns has knowledge and know-how of the adult learner. In addition, he has the experience to work across the generations with a genuine quality that is laced with anecdotes, humor, and heartfelt passion. Former clients include the New York State Unified Teachers, New Jersey Principals' Association, Illinois Coalition of Essential Schools, and the Ministry of Education of Singapore.

Kerns received his bachelor’s and master's degrees from Longwood College in Virginia. He also holds a doctor of education degree from the University of Delaware, with an emphasis in education leadership. Informative Assessment: When It’s Not About a Grade is Kerns' first publication
